A couples journey with adoption

New York.....New York

I don’t know what the deal is but I am beginning to wonder if people going thru adoption have cravings too.  Ever since Easter I have been fixated on candy.  I have eaten several bowls of sour jelly beans, then to skittles, and mix it around with a bag of sour patch kids!

So last Wednesday I was in Rite Aid getting my sour patch kids fix and waited in line behind a gentleman checking out.  He proceeded to complain to the cashier about how he wishes he could go home on this beautiful day and have a beer but instead he had this and that to do.  He went on to tell her how good life was before he had kids and he and the cashier exchanged stories about all the fun they used to have before they had kids and responsibility.  I stood patiently waiting and avoiding the urge to take my bag of sour patch kids and smack him up the back of the head.

Yet, in the car I thought.  You always want what you don’t have.  Parents love their kids but they miss their free time.  People in our situation long for the chaos that comes with kids.  However, a sense of relief came over me.  I get to have both.  I get this time right now while I am young and healthy to do as I please then I get to have a family and all that the ups and downs that comes with that life.  Some sort of appreciation formed that night for what I have and a peace with this wonderful life I have been given.  When we were in New York, I also was thankful I was doing this while I was young because all that walking and stair climbing was tough!

Critt and I headed out early Friday morning for New York.  It was amazing.  We had two friends from college that decided to follow their dreams, packed up, and moved to New York about 9 months ago.  They provided a roof over our heads for the first couple of nights and were the best tour guides known to man.  Getting shown around New York with real New Yorkers made it more authentic and less touristy.  We walked a huge part of the island of Manhattan. It was also Fleet Week in the city so we got to see lots of our countries finest too!

We ended our trip with a night at the Waldorf Astoria.  A little early anniversary present from my husband and it was beautiful.  We had a lot of fun with our tour guides playing hiding go seek in the fabulous hotel since many of the ballrooms were empty because of the holiday.  It was overall a fantastic trip and really we enjoyed every second of it.  New York was so refreshing and it was nice to experience a completely different way of life for a few days.
